We fully respect and admire the professional work carried out within special education schools. However, if a good practice from those centres has not been tested in an autism unit, then the practice –even being really good- is out of the scope of this website. Nevertheless, there are other forums where those practices can be shared.
There is no research that has identified the answer to this question and AMUSE project will try to bring some light into this with the development of a research study aimed at identifying the profile of those within the spectrum who can benefit more from this model of schooling.
The practice available shows that students of an Autism Unit are usually those who have a diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability. Those students usually find more difficulties to follow the regular curriculum, even with the relevant curriculum adaptations, or they only follow a specific part of it.
This particular model of schooling is intended to function more as a small centre of resources within a mainstream school, fully integrated with all the activities of the school, rather than an isolated space for those with autism.
